Types of back pain and preventing them

Back pain is a common reason why people’s works are restrained or limited. If it becomes unbearable, the doctor is the next stop. Back pain is also one of the most common causes of disability worldwide. Still, there are measures that we can do in order to prevent and relieve your back pain. First, what kind of pain are you feeling?  Let’s dive into the known and usual types of back pain, their symptoms, and prevention.

Types of back pain

Back pain is too common that most people have experienced it at some point in their lives. There are several causes of back pain, while some are from accidents, muscle, strains, or injuries, most back pain is self-inflicted due to bad habits. The causes may be different from person to person but almost all share the same symptoms. These could be the following:

  • A localized pain in the neck, upper back, or lower back especially when lifting objects or doing strenuous activity.
  • Persistent aching from the base of the neck to the tail bone.
  • Chronic pain in the middle to the lower back after an extended amount of time.
  • Pain when standing straight or muscle spasms in the lower back when standing
  • Back pain from the lower part of the buttocks, down to the thigh, and calf to toes.

The prevention for all the types of back pain is a long-standing issue. It was thought that exercise and a healthy lifestyle are enough to prevent back pain. However, these aren’t all the time true. In fact, studies have shown that some high-impact exercises can increase the pain one is suffering. There are specific exercises for back pain, our dedicated therapists in Revolution PT are available to teach you the kinds of exercises befitting to you and how the exercises are to be performed.

Sciatica

One of the common types of back pain is sciatica. It is a common pain that affects the sciatic nerve, the large nerve from the lower back down to the back of the legs. Symptoms for sciatica includes lower back pain, hip pain, numbness and difficulty in moving the leg/foot, constant pain on one leg, pain in standing up, and pain in the leg that worsens when sitting down.

People feel their pain differently, while some are severe, others are just bearable. For frequent pain, it is best to seek medical attention as this pain can worsen and can limit one’s ability to have a satisfying life.

If you are suffering from back ache and you think it’s still on the average pain scale, then you try the early measures such as proper exercise and good diet. It is good to check your body properly.

Ask yourself: Am I standing smart? Do I slouch? Good posture greatly reduces the stress on the back muscle thus preventing the back from aching. How about when sitting? Do I choose a seat with proper back support? When you are seated, make sure that you change your position every one in a while. Keep your knees and your hip on the same level.
