Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis?

The most common type of arthritis pain is Osteoarthritis, which can develop in a few ways including sudden injuries to a joint, or it can develop over time after an injury has healed.

This is often true for labor-intensive careers. If your job requires you to swing tools in a repetitive motion (such as assembly line work, roofing, or carpentry), your joints are at a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis.

Obesity can also lead to, or be a contributing factor to, Osteoarthritis, because additional strain is put on hips, joints, and knees which are carrying extra weight.

On the other hand, Rheumatoid Arthritis is a bit different. It is the second most common form of arthritis pain which develops as an autoimmune response. When someone has Rheumatoid Arthritis, their immune system sees the joints as a threat and attacks the joints, resulting in inflammation and pain.

Do these conditions sound familiar?

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Approximately 50 million people with it. And because it is so common, it’s important to understand the symptoms and seek treatment before they begin to interfere with your lifestyle.

Osteoarthritis occurs with wear and tear to the joints. It can be due to repetitive over-use of the joints or natural deterioration which comes with age. It causes severe pain, as the cartilage is no longer acting as a cushion and shock absorber. Without thick cartilage, the bones rub together, resulting in tight, sore joints.

Other symptoms that can occur as a result of Rheumatoid Arthritis include painful swelling, joint deformities, and bone erosion. These symptoms result in tenderness, stiffness, weakness, and tingling “pinpoint” sensations.

The result is often very limiting in daily life making it difficult to work out, walk and run, participate in leisure activities, and take care of a home and family.
